Question by Becca O:
hearing the fetal Heartbeat?
Today I was screwing around at work (labor and delivery unit) with the doppler monitor and was trying to find the heartbeat (15 weeks along) and couldn’t find it. I’m no professional, and I’ve heard the heartbeat three times before at the doctor.

Should I worry, or is it just my skill? I only tried for about ten minutes, and it wasn’t a “fetal heartbeat doppler”.

I don’t think I should worry because I wasn’t really positioned right. I don’t know, any advice?
Thanks.

Question by Allycea’s Mommy:
Irregular Hearbeat.. Now they’re sending me to a Maternal Fetal Specialist ?
I went for a DR appointment last Monday, and during the routine heartbeat check, the doctor noticed that the baby had an irregular heartbeat. I was sent for an ultrasound sound, and sure enough, the baby’s heart beat was irregular (it would skip every so often). He said that it could be caused by too much caffeine ingestion (which over the weekend, I drank about 6-7 glasses of tea, plus a small cup of coffee Monday morning). OK so they wanted me to lay off the caffeine and go by and have another check up ultrasound on Wednesday. The baby’s heartbeat was regulating, but still skipped a couple times, PLUS the ultrasound tech noticed what to her looked like the beginnings of placenta abruptio. So they sent me up to L&D to “monitor” me. As the day went on, I had 2 more ultrasounds done, and by the time the Maternal Fetal Specialist came in to do his ultrasound, he couldn’t see anything wrong with the placenta, only thing he noticed was the heartbeat. He said it was fetal arrhythmia, and they want to send me to get an echo-cardiogram. The maternal fetal specialist said basically that he’s not concerned with the heartbeat issue, and that it’s not very umcommon. I’m still really scared though. We’ve never had any problems with the baby’s heartbeat until now, its always been really strong. But what worries me even more is the fact that while I was in the hospital, they gave me 2 steriod shots to help with the baby’s lung development in case I have to deliver early, and put me on Procardia to stop the braxton hicks contractions that I’m having.

I’m only 34 weeks, and terrified that something might be wrong with the baby and that I’ll deliver early. Has anybody gone through this or does anybody have some words of advice? I’m really freaking out.

He was born at 32 weeks, that was his main problem while in the hospital, his heart lowering, or he stops breathing, so he had to come home on a monitor that alarms us if he stops breathing or his heart lowers in rate. I was wondering if anyone else’s baby had to be on the monitor and how long were they on it? I was told he should be off when he would have been full term..wellllll he is 8 months and still on it and still having episodes, more frustrating than anything!
Wow, thank you so much for all this information. He has an appt. to have his monitor downloading to see how many episodes are true and what is happening and how often they are really happening. I will def. call ahead and ask about the nCPAP. Thanks again so very much!

Ok so I am on my second pregnancy and ever since the beginning I have been having alternating dreams of the baby’s sex (girl, boy, girl, boy). Well I had my ultrasound and there is a little boy in there. Last night I had a dream that I had twins (both boys). With my first child I had dreams the whole time that I was having a boy and they were right. I am so confused. I want to be prepared if there is more than one in there but the ultrasound only had one so I don’t know what to think. My mom has said from the beginning that it’s a girl. In the dream last night they were doing my c-section and pulled out a baby then they said “omg is that another baby?” and pulled another baby out. With my son the dreams were so straight forward but these dreams are driving me crazy (in a good way). I guess I won’t know for sure until I go into labor b/c I can’t have another ultrasound. Is there anyway they could miss another baby on an ultrasound or the baby heart monitor thingy they use at the visits? Just curious I would really LOVE to have a baby girl (did the first time around too) even if she came with a brother.
I wanted a girl last time too and never had dreams that it was a girl so I don’t think that is the circumstance. That was why I was confused.
