What is a non-stress test?

I am 40 weeks and 2 days pregnant as of today. 2 weeks ago my doctor told me I was dilated to 1 cm. Then Monday he didn't check my cervix he just hooked me up to fetal heart rate monitors. He told me to come back in on Thursday (yesterday.) Well I went and he checked my cervix and said the baby was still high and he didn't say if I was dilated any more or not. I'm guessing I'm not or else he would've said. He doesn't want to risk a C-section by inducing me because of my petite size. So he made another appt. for Tuesday and said I will get a non-stress test then. What exactly is this and what will I have to do?
That makes sense. He should've just said that because that's the test he did to me on Monday! Weird.

with mine they hook me up to a fetal heart monitor that has something to measure the force of contractions & give me a button to press every time i feel him move.
im pretty sure they just want to see his heart rate during rest & active periods & during contracrions to make sure he or she isnt in fetal distress.

They just hook you up to the monitor and monitor the baby's heart rate as well as any contractions you are having. You'll be laying down and relaxing so that they get a nice base line read. Just a "stress free" test. :)

A non stress test is just when they monitor the fetal heartrate and uterine activitiy (as well as your heartrate) for 20 minutes.
